Role of Project Engineer in Inhouse Project Management
The Project engineer in small projects shall do the following work himself or by his allocated team but for detailed
engineering it is advisable to hire consultants.
The Basic Engineering includes:
Preparation of Material Balance: (The material balance also tells us about un-utilized streams which can be identified
as “waste” streams if not recycled and re-processed for recovery of some material. Thus we can prepare a summary of
emissions of gases/ vapors, liquid and solid wastes coming out of the plant. Thus follows a separate unit for
process water treatment, chemical treatment for waste streams before releasing into a canal, and any treatment
for solid waste which may later be incinerated.)
Preparation of Energy Balance: (The energy balance calculations tell us about us heat duties of
various heat exchanger equipments, steam requirements, water (brine, oil as heating media) requirements).
The above two documents help in the preparation of series of PFD & P&ID's.
Preparation of Equipment master list.
Initial Sizing/Rating of plant Equipments.
Preparation of Datasheets.
Electrical machinery load requirements.Preparation of Instrument list.
Work out the interlock logic.
Line Sizing, Line list preparation.
Preparation of Utility Network Diagram.
The Detail engineering includes:
Preparation of plot plan
Preparation of Equipment Layout/Plant Layout.
Preparation of Civil Foundations and structural design.
Preparation of Framing Diagram.
Approval of Detailed drawings of fabricated equipments.
Nozzle Orientation.
Piping G.A
Piping isometrics.
Detailed specifications of brought out items.
Detailed Engineering for electrical covering power distribution, including sub-station, line diagrams,
cable layout, earthling layout, lighting layout, inter-locking system, consumer list and BOM for the above.
Detailed Engineering for Piping including BOM of valves, fitting, pipe, pipe support, etc
Detailed Engineering for instrumentation and controls including schematic diagrams, process piping hook-up,
cable / tubing / air line routing, cable / tubing schedule, inter-locking diagrams and specifications and
BOM for the above, instrument and control system philosophy.
